LES: Mentoring & Coaching

Understand the difference between mentoring and coaching, and adopt useful tools and models to implement your mentoring and coaching program

Workshop Synopsis

There is a distinct difference between mentoring and coaching, although many people have come to use both terms synonymously. Mentoring is focused on the individual, while a coach focuses on performance instead.

Mentoring is a subjective approach, where the mentor is truly a facilitator with no agenda, where the primary focus is to help the mentee achieve success in whatever facets of life it may be. Mentors are usually selected by the mentees themselves. Mentor and mentee relationship lasts for as long as is mutually agreeable and lasts usually as long as it takes for the mentee to see results, while many others may be for life. The mentor and mentee may be from different organizations or even countries, and may still maintain this relationship for years to come.

Coaching in contrast, is a more objective approach. A coach has a specific agenda, and focuses on the individual’s performance in a specific area, rather than with life as a whole. The relationship is usually work related, and position, seniority or experience plays a huge role in which a potential coach is singled out. Coach and trainee relationship usually lasts for a specific agreed duration, which lasts usually for the duration of that specific job task or performance.
